There are 3 basic types of sexual lubricants to enhance sexual pleasure and, for many people, make sex feel amazing and a great way to make it not hurt.

For each person there are different needs to think about when buying a sexual lubricant.  These are based upon their medical conditions, age, and or simple preference.  Making the right choice can make intimacy more enjoyable – either with a partner, or with yourself.

There are many different types of lubes, but we’ve narrowed it down to three basic types: water based sexual lubes, silicone based lubes, and oil based lubes.

Always check the ingredients based in any lubricant to ensure you are not allergic to any of the materials listed in the product.   Also – when you try a new one, use  little bit at first to make sure you don’t get a reaction.  While no one on our staff has had issues, we always preach caution when trying new things on your sensitive areas.

Water-Based Sexual Lubricants

Water-based personal lubricants are water-soluble.  This is probably the most common lubricant that many couples choose – and with good reason.  Water-based sexual lubes are the safest, cleanliest, and least intrusive sexual lube out there.

The only issues we have with water-based lubricants, somewhat ironically, is that they don’t work well in water, they wash off easily.  They also don’t last as long as the other two types of lubes.

Like all lubes, water based lubricants are used to avoid friction during intimacy, but they can dry out rather quickly and may need to be reapplied during sexual intercourse or during masturbation with use of sex toys

But these minor complaints aside – a good water-based lube is our favorite – whether it is for vaginal sex, anal sex or for toy play.

Speaking of toys – water-based lubes are the safest to use on sex toys. Certain lubricants such as oil and silicone based are not always safe for use on sex toys that are porous.  They can leave a residue that can cause infections or start to degrade the quality of the toys.  The recommended lubricant to use for sex toys are typically water based.

Another positive thing about water based sex lubes are that they clean up easier than other lubricants, they are non staining and  will not typically ruin clothing, bed sheets or other products.

This is the most common type of sexual lubricant and is with  condoms and toys.

Silicone-Based Sexual Lubricants

Silicone based lubricants are not water soluble and have a much longer effect.  If you’re going to nee a long lasting lube – this is the type we recommend.

When using silicone based lubricants, you do not need to reapply the lube as often as you do with a water based lubricant.   Another positive about silicone based lubricants is that they are certified latex safe.  This is imperative if practicing safe sex while using condoms.

While silicone lubricants are safe for sexual intercourse, whether it is vaginal or anal sex.  However, as mentioned above, in the earlier paragraph, silicone based lubricants are not recommended or safe with sex toys.

The silicone may actually dissolve the surface of a sex toy especially if the sex toy product is made of silicone!

As it eats away at the surface is makes it a breeding ground for bacteria.  As with use of sex toy cleaners, that sanitize the toy, because its made of silicone and the silicone lubricants eats away at the products, this becomes porous and the toy cleaners can not reach this bacteria.

So why use silicone based lubricants?  Because they feel amazing.  We think silicone lubes feel the best of any lube out there, and once again, silicone lubes are safe for vaginal, anal sex or sexual intercourse with the use of latex condoms.

Oil-Based Sexual Lubricants

Oil based sexual lubricants are petroleum based and are usually made of products such as petroleum jelly.  Oil based lubricants are not recommended with use of latex condoms.  There is a high chance of breakage or slipping during sexual intercourse with oil based lubricants.

The use of oil based lubricants amongst lovers and couples is to use oil based lubricants who want an enjoyable intimate moment, without the preservatives and other additives.   Oil based lubes feel stunning, and are great when getting yourself off!

We recommend them  couples,  lovers and partners who do not need to worry about protection such as a married couple, who are not concerned about having protected sex, but want to explore new playthings in unprotected sex.

Different Strokes for Different Folks

There are differences between all three types of sex lubricants.  We’ve outlined the main ones to help you make a good choice when choosing a new lubricant for your intimate life.
